Overview

Freehold Cartage operates its own Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in Freehold, NJ, where we’ve processed Class A and Class B recyclable materials since 2003. We work with businesses, institutions, and municipalities throughout Central New Jersey to process recyclables and construction debris on-site, giving our commercial customers direct control and accountability over where their materials go.

Note for residential customers:
Curbside recycling collection schedules, accepted materials, and program details are managed by your local township. For Upper Freehold and Plumsted Townships, contact us as we provide recycling service for these two counties. Otherwise, please refer to your township’s website or collection notices for curbside recycling information.

Understanding the New Jersey Recycling Tax

Recycling Enhancement Act Tax

On January 13, 2008, P.L. 2007, c.311 was signed into law, imposing a Recycling Tax on every ton of solid waste accepted for disposal or transfer at a New Jersey solid waste facility. Every owner or operator of a solid waste facility in NJ — unless specifically exempt — is subject to this tax.

Construction Debris Recycling

Concrete, brick, block, and asphalt are pulverized into crushed concrete product. Wood, brush, and stumps are ground into wood chips or mulch. Tires are containerized and shipped to a certified recycling facility. We keep construction waste out of landfills and put materials back to work.

Processed materials are baled, containerized, or converted into usable products. Wood chips, mulch, topsoil, and crushed concrete are available for purchase. Everything else is shipped to certified reuse partners.

Does Freehold Cartage provide curbside recycling pickup?

Curbside recycling collection for residents is managed by your local township unless you are in Upper Freehold or Plumsted Townships. Please check your township’s website or your most recent collection notice for pickup schedules and accepted materials. FCI services Upper Freehold and Plumsted Townships. What materials does FCI's Material Recovery Facility process?

FCI processes Class A recyclables — glass, plastics, aluminum and metal cans, paper, and cardboard — and Class B materials including wood, brush, stumps, concrete, brick, block, asphalt, and tires.

How does the NJ recycling tax affect my bill?

New Jersey’s Recycling Enhancement Act (P.L. 2007, c.311) imposes a $3 per ton tax on disposal and transfer fees at all solid waste facilities in the state. This tax is applied per ton of solid waste accepted and is passed through on your bill as required by state law. It applies to all NJ facility operators unless specifically exempt.

Does FCI recycle electronics or batteries?

No. Freehold Cartage does not accept electronics or batteries at our recycling facility. Many townships offer dedicated e-waste and battery collection through municipal programs — check your township’s website or collection notices for drop-off locations and schedules.
